A Closer Look At Quail Hollow Club

An incredibly prestigious country club found in Charlotte, you may spend some time on the waitlist before you become a member of the Quail Hollow Club. This isn't a typical country club and doesn't cater to families as much as many others in Charlotte do.

Instead, Quail Hollow Club is all about men and golf. It's an expensive club and it's incredibly difficult to become a member, compared to other Charlotte country club options.

History of Quail Hollow Club

It all began in 1959 when James J. Harris held a meeting to mark the beginning of Quail Hollow Club. The club was founded by 21 men and filed its certificate of incorporation in 1960. The club started with just over 257 acres of space to provide all the club activities.

The clubhouse was designed by Charles W. Connelly & Associates and opened in September of 1967. It was designed with a southern style with a white exterior. Later in 1999, the clubhouse was redesigned to provide a more open feel. It features a grand ballroom, a library, a card room, a main kitchen, 15 fireplaces, locker rooms, lounge areas, grills, and more.

A members' pavilion was constructed in 2008 near the 18th green. This pavilion offered a members-only area during the Wells Fargo tournament. The building features a large gathering space, a kitchen, a bar and oak paneling throughout.

At the same time, the swimming pool was re-done and connects to the members' pavilion. There's also a tennis shop, which was rebuilt at the same time.

The history of Quail Hollow Club includes the golf course opening in 1961 with modifications made to 4 holes by Arnold Palmer in 1985. The course was reconstructed by Tom Fazio in 1997 and the practice facility was reconstructed in 2001. Rock walls were added to both hole 7 and 17, as well.

The bunkers throughout the course were revitalized in 2009 and all greens were converted from bentgrass to MiniVerde bermudagrass in 2013. Tom Fazio modified several holes in 2016, as well.

Quail Hollow Club & The PGA Tour

From 1969 to 1979, the club held the Kemper Open Invitational Golf Tournament. It later held the World Seniors Invitational Golf Tournament from 1980 to 1989.

For many years, the PGA Tour didn't play at Quail Hollow Club, but it returned the prestigious course in 2003. The Wachovia Championship was played from 2003 to 2008 before it was changed to the Quail Hollow Championship.

The Wells Fargo Championship began to play at the club in 2009 and has been played here ever since. In addition, the club was the site of the 2017 PGA Championship and has been selected to be the site of the 2021 Presidents Club.

The Golf Course

The original architect of the golf course at Quail Hollow Club was George Cobb. The course has undergone many modifications and improvements since with contributions from Arnold Palmer and Tom Fazio.

It's known for the drivable dogleg 14th old measuring just 346 yards with a lake to the left side of the home. The hole features a two-tiered green, which is very narrow and surrounded by bunkers.

Another signature hole is the 17th, which measures 221 years with the tee shot going directly over the water. It's known for the rock wall rings, which make this a very difficult shot for golfers.

Quail Hollow Club Championship Park

Built in 2004, Championship Park was added between the ninth and tenth fairways. It honors those winning professional tournaments at Quail Hollow. The park includes a grove of trees, a very high fireplace in the center, and plenty of stone.

Membership

Quail Hollow Club is a member-owned club and private. The only way to become a member is through a member recommendation from a current club member. Even with the proper recommendation, you will still need to come up with a $100,000 initiation fee. Membership dues are about $800 per month after the initiation fee. The club only has about 300 members.

If you're looking for a very prestigious country club in Charlotte to become a member of, Quail Hollow Club may be the one. However, you will need to become friends with a current member and gain a recommendation if you want to join this prestigious club.

All banquet facilities are only available for members and their guests. Holding an event at the club isn't possible without a member involved. In addition, you must be an invited guest to play this incredible golf course, if you're not a member of the club.
